Scholarship Criteria

Please find the criteria for each of our grants below. When you're ready, and have understood the terms, feel free to apply to any of the grants that you qualify for.


St. Andrew High School for Girls Grant

Purpose

The Ubuntu Visual Arts Grant serves the purpose of providing financial aid for Visual Arts students based on financial need, and demonstrated passion, skill and love for the arts, as well as an expressed desire to pursue a career in the field.

Criteria

The student eligible for assistance must be a Visual Arts student, of grades 10 – 13, who attends the St. Andrew High School for girls. Consideration will be given to academic achievement in the area, financial need, and an overall passion for the Visual Arts.

Guidelines

This grant will be awarded annually, to the selected student, in the first term of the academic school year.

Prize

Each scholarship awarded will amount to Twenty Thousand Jamaican Dollars ($40,000.00). This amount will be paid in full at the time of the award/start of the following school semester. In addition to this, awardees will be featured on the Ubuntu Creative Arts Project webpage, under the “Awardees” section under “Scholarships and Grants”.

Deadline

The application period is from the 1st of February - the 30th of June. Applications will not be accepted outside of this period.

Renewal Process

The grant is not renewable, as only one student will be selected per academic year.

Wolmer's Preparatory School Grant

Purpose

The Ubuntu Creative Arts Scholarship serves the purpose of providing financial aid for one child who displays a passion for the Visual Arts. The selection will be based on financial need, demonstrated passion, skill and an overall love for the area.

Criteria

The student eligible for assistance must be a student of the Wolmer’s Preparatory School and must be graduating from Grade 6 in July.

Guidelines

This scholarship will be awarded annually, and the student will be selected by the visual arts professor with assistance from the administrative staff and professors.

Prize

Each scholarship awarded will amount to JA $20,000. This amount will be paid in full, in the form of a cheque, at the time of the award/during the graduation ceremony.

Deadline

The deadline for selection of the awardee is the 1st of May. This will allow for the necessary measures to be put in place to award the child.

Renewal Process

The scholarship is not renewable, as one child will be selected each academic year.

College & University Grant (Canada)

Purpose

The Ubuntu Creative Arts College & University Grant serves the purpose of providing financial aid for international students (from the Caribbean diaspora) in Canada who are pursuing diplomas and degrees in creative fields (as defined in the Criteria section below).

Criteria

  • Must be a college or university student studying in a creative field (the fine and applied arts)
    • Proof of enrolment in program required
    • Fine arts include:
      • Visual Arts
      • Performing Arts
      • Culinary Arts
      • Liberal Arts
    • Applied Arts include:
      • Design related fields (Interior Design, Industrial Design, Architecture)
      • Film & Television
      • Animation & Illustration
      • Craft
  • Students are to submit:
    • 2 recommendation letters
    • A 500-word write-up introduction from themselves and explaining why the student believes that they deserve the grant or a 5-minute long video introducing themselves and explaining why the student believes that they deserve the grant.
    • Digital files of their work - preferably one of their favourite pieces along with a 250-word explanation of why the piece speaks to them

Guidelines

This grant will be awarded annually to the selected student in the Winter Semester.

The scholarship can be used for the following expenses:

  • living expenses such as (phone bills: data and the amount spent, rent), and
  • academic expenses like textbooks.

To ensure the appropriate use of funds, the scholarship allocation should be documented with receipts.

Prize

Each grant awarded will amount to One Thousand ($1000) Canadian dollars. This amount will be paid in full at the time of the award. In addition to this, awardees will be featured on the Ubuntu Creative Arts Project website, under the “Awardeessection under “Scholarships & Grants”.

Deadline

The application period is from the 1st of June - the 30th of November. Applications will not be accepted outside of this period.

Renewal Process

The grant is not renewable, as only one student per academic year will be awarded. Students are more than welcome to re-apply in following years for the chance to receive the grant once again.

Creative Arts High School Grant (Jamaica)

Purpose

The Ubuntu Creative Arts High School Grant serves the purpose of providing financial aid for high school students in Jamaica who have demonstrated a passion for the visual arts.

Criteria

  • High school students from the grades 10 - 13 
  • Consideration will be given to academic achievement, financial need, and an overall passion for the visual arts

Guidelines

This grant will be awarded annually, to the selected student, in the second term of the academic school year.

Prize

Each grant awarded will amount to Fifty Thousand Jamaican Dollars ($50,000.00). This amount will be paid in full at the time of the award / start of the second school term. In addition to this, awardees will be featured on the Ubuntu Creative Arts Project website, under the “Awardeessection under “Scholarships & Grants”.

Deadline

The application period is from the 1st of June - the 30th of November. Applications will not be accepted outside of this period.

Renewal Process

The grant is not renewable, as only one student will be selected per academic year. Previous awardees are welcome to apply in subsequent years.
